Дебют первого альбома состоялся в 1982 году. Он назывался Holy Diver. Сам Р. Д. Дио вышел на эстраду ещё в 1957 году, с Ronnie & The Red Caps. Изначально Dio состояла из четырёх музыкантов: Ронни Джеймс Дио - вокал и клавишные, клавишные и бас-гитара - Джимми Бэйн, Вивиан Кэмпбелл на гитаре и гитара - Вивиан Кэмпбелл. В итоге остались 5 музыкантов: Simon Wright - ударные, клавишник Scott Warren, бас-гитара - Rudy Sarzo, Скотт Уоррен - клавиши, Саймон Райт - ударные. Сам же Ронни Джеймс Дио до появления на свет своей группы учавствовал в группах Heaven & Hell, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Elf. Вместе с известными музыкантами, занимался благотворительностью, участвуя в концертах. Успел выпустить книгу - "Энциклопедию Хэви Метал"рассказывающую об этом музыкальном стиле. Уникальный вокал музыканта считался лучшим в своём жанре. Metallica и AC DC, Scorpions и Slayer часто говорят о влиянии Ronnie James Dio на своё творчество. 16 мая 2010 года "крёстный отец" Heavy Metal, на шестьдесят восьмом году, ушел из жизни.
